The verdict
Bottom line
Pick the layer: display, Mac control, reused Car Thing, or car screen.
There is not a clean Apple Music equivalent of Spotify Car Thing or Nocturne if the target is a small hardware controller with album art, buttons, and wireless Mac/iPhone control. The closest real hardware answer is Tuneshine. It is closer to a beautiful now-playing frame than to a Car Thing controller. For a Mac desk setup, software such as Sleeve or Tuneful is more practical. For a car, a portable CarPlay display is the right category. For a reused Spotify Car Thing, Nocturne is the strongest path, but it is still fundamentally a Spotify/Car Thing project.
Fast verdict
The decision in one table
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A dedicated Apple Music album-art display on a shelf or desk | Tuneshine | Purpose-built hardware, Apple Music support, Wi-Fi operation after setup, and an intentional room-display form factor. |
| Car Thing-like hardware controls for Apple Music | No clean product | Apple Music's public now-playing surface is harder for third-party ambient devices than Spotify's, and CarPlay is designed for car displays. |
| A Mac desktop now-playing widget with controls | Sleeve or Tuneful | Both are Mac-native and support Apple Music plus Spotify; Sleeve is more visual, Tuneful is more menu/notch-control focused. |
| A tiny Apple-owned controller | Apple Watch Now Playing | Controls iPhone and other playback targets, but it is wrist-first, not a desk display. |
| A car display for Apple Music | Portable CarPlay screen | Good for car use, bad as a desk widget. It projects iPhone CarPlay rather than acting as a general Mac/iPhone now-playing accessory. |
| A reused Spotify Car Thing | Nocturne | Best way to give that hardware a second life, but expect Spotify-first assumptions and flashing risk. |
The catch
Apple Music is not as easy to display as Spotify.
Spotify Car Thing worked because Spotify controlled both the service integration and the hardware experience. Apple Music does not expose the same simple current-track shape to every third-party gadget. Tuneshine's own support docs explain the workaround: for Apple Music it checks recently played history and depends on Listening History being enabled, so artwork can lag or remain visible after playback stops.
Comparison ladder
Choose by where the music is playing.
| Pick | Use it for | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Now Playing | Quick control of iPhone, HomePod, or other Apple playback | Official Apple controls, volume via Digital Crown, no extra desk gadget | Small wrist UI, not a persistent desk display. |
| Sleeve / Dock Party / Tuneful on Mac | Desk setups where the Mac is already the music host | Apple Music support, album art, controls, low cost | Software-only; no separate physical screen. |
| Tuneshine | Room or desk album-art display for Apple Music | Dedicated hardware, Apple Music support, attractive 64 x 64 LED display, local API | Primarily display, not a Car Thing-style controller; Apple Music can lag because it uses history. |
| Nocturne on Spotify Car Thing | Reusing Car Thing hardware for Spotify | Touchscreen, knob/buttons, active open-source firmware | Requires used/abandoned hardware, flashing, and Spotify-centric assumptions. |
| Portable CarPlay display | Older cars or temporary car setups | Real Apple Music on a larger iPhone-projected car UI | Car-first, bulky for a desk, not a Mac now-playing display. |
| DIY Raspberry Pi / Tidbyt-style project | Tinkerers who want exactly their own display | Full control over visuals and automations | Apple Music integration complexity, ongoing maintenance, no polished controls out of the box. |
Product notes
What each option actually is
| Option | Current read | Best use | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuneshine | Direct hardware from $199.99, 6.3 in square, 64 x 64 LED display, Apple Music/Spotify/Sonos/last.fm support. | Dedicated album-art object for a room or desk. | Apple Music is not true real-time account polling; local files and listening-history quirks matter. |
| Nocturne | Open-source firmware for Spotify Car Thing, latest GitHub release listed as 4.0.0 on 2026-05-09. | Saving an existing Car Thing and using it as a Spotify display/controller. | Flashing risk, used hardware supply, and no official Spotify endorsement. |
| Sleeve 3 | Mac app, direct price shown as $5.99, supports Apple Music, Spotify, and Doppler. | Persistent Mac desktop album art and controls. | Requires macOS 26 Tahoe per current product page. |
| Dock Party | Mac App Store app, supports Apple Music and Spotify. | Dock-adjacent now-playing controls. | It is a Mac customization/control app, not hardware. |
| Tuneful | Mac app for Spotify and Apple Music controls from notch, menu bar, or mini player. | Fast Mac controls without a separate frame. | Less like a display object; best on a MacBook-style workflow. |
| Apple Watch | Official Now Playing app controls media on iPhone and other devices. | Small physical control surface already in the Apple ecosystem. | Not glanceable from across a desk and not a square album-art display. |
| Portable CarPlay screens | Car-oriented displays such as Carpuride W101 support wireless/wired CarPlay. | Adding Apple Music, maps, and calls to an older vehicle. | Overkill and awkward for a desk; CarPlay is built for driving. |
Recommendation
Buy Tuneshine for the object; use Mac software for control.
- Buy Tuneshine if the object matters: a small, attractive music display that can sit on a desk or shelf and show Apple Music artwork.
- Use Sleeve or Tuneful if the job is mostly practical Mac control. They are cheaper, less fragile, and closer to the actual Apple Music playback surface.
- Use Nocturne only if the Spotify Car Thing itself is the appeal or if one is already available.
- Use a portable CarPlay screen only for the car. It is the right answer for an older vehicle without CarPlay, not for a desktop display.

Claim table
| Where | Claim | Confidence | Source | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product notes | Nocturne is a firmware project for Spotify Car Thing rather than a new standalone Apple Music display. | High | GitHub | Nocturne's companion app and subscription model can change. |
| Fast verdict | Tuneshine is the closest dedicated Apple Music display hardware identified in the source sweep. | High | Tuneshine | It emphasizes artwork display, not knob/button playback control. |
| The catch | Tuneshine's Apple Music support depends on Listening History and recently played updates, which can make artwork lag or persist after playback stops. | High | Tuneshine | Apple or Tuneshine could change the integration later. |
| Comparison ladder | Mac software such as Sleeve, Dock Party, and Tuneful provides practical Apple Music now-playing display/control surfaces without separate hardware. | High | Replay Software | Pricing, OS requirements, and supported music apps can change through app updates. |
| Fast verdict | CarPlay is designed as an iPhone experience for car displays and vehicle controls, making portable CarPlay screens a car solution rather than a desk-display solution. | High | Apple | Portable displays can be repurposed, but that is outside their intended design. |
