Verdict
Who should buy it
Choose Ring 5 for a thin ring and overnight trends; the membership and weaker workout heart-rate results reduce its appeal as an exercise-first tracker.
Specifications
The exact configuration matters
The current Silver price and exact phone OS minimum remain unverified.
| Area | Finding |
|---|---|
| Form factor | The tracker is worn as a finger ring. |
| Battery | The maker rates battery life at six to nine days. |
| Price and total cost | The current exact Silver price is unverified. |
| Phone compatibility | The exact minimum phone OS version is unverified. |
| Ongoing cost | US membership costs $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year, with one month included. |
| Data controls | Oura uses an account and cloud service; Membership Hub export and app or hub deletion controls are available. |
| Fitness role | Reviews favor overnight comfort and trends but report workout heart-rate limitations. |
Alternatives
Choose among different strengths
Battery figures use different test conditions. Policy descriptions are not independent privacy audits, and consumer tracking does not establish medical accuracy. Unknown subscription or tier details remain unknown.
| Choice | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| [Google Fitbit Air](https://fieldguides.co/g/google-fitbit-air) | Choose Fitbit Air for comfortable, low-cost daily and sleep tracking without a screen; workouts that need GPS depend on the phone. | Core tracking and the optional paid Coach service have different costs. |
| [Oura Ring 5](https://fieldguides.co/g/oura-ring-5) | Choose Ring 5 for a thin ring and overnight trends; the membership and weaker workout heart-rate results reduce its appeal as an exercise-first tracker. | The current Silver price and exact phone OS minimum remain unverified. |
| [Apple Watch Series 12](https://fieldguides.co/g/apple-watch-series-12) | Choose Series 12 for on-wrist workouts and a smartwatch interface when you use an iPhone; charging remains a more frequent task than with a ring or screenless band. | The exact iPhone minimum and optional paid-service boundaries are unverified here. |
| [WHOOP 5.0 One](https://fieldguides.co/g/whoop-5-one) | Consider WHOOP One if you prefer a screenless band sold with a membership; confirm the exact One feature set before treating hardware reviews as a recommendation for that tier. | Two WHOOP 5.0 hardware reviews do not establish that the One bundle was tested. |
| [Garmin vivoactive 6](https://fieldguides.co/g/garmin-vivoactive-6) | Choose vivoactive 6 for GPS sports and a conventional watch display across iPhone and Android; the older heart-rate sensor and missing premium sensors are the main compromises. | The $299.99 figure is launch MSRP, not a verified current offer. |
Review evidence
What reviewers and owners actually found
The review and owner accounts describe particular units and software versions; they do not establish reliability rates.
| Source | Evidence | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| wired.com | Editorial review | The reviewer found Ring 5 more comfortable but saw similar readings to Ring 4 in ordinary use. The membership remained a material cost; this does not demonstrate improved clinical accuracy. |
| androidcentral.com | Editorial review | A month-long review praised the thin, light design and battery life while finding workout heart rate unreliable. The subscription was another drawback. |
| reddit.com | Owner account | A two-week owner account adds early-use context, but its short duration does not establish long-term battery health, durability or measurement accuracy. |
Limits
What could change the decision
- The current Silver price and exact phone OS minimum remain unverified.
- No exact Amazon ASIN was verified for the selected configurations, so there are no Amazon purchase buttons.
- Manufacturer battery claims, review tests and owner anecdotes use different conditions and should not be ranked as equivalent measurements.
- These are consumer tracking choices. Feature names and privacy policies do not establish medical accuracy, diagnostic equivalence or an independent privacy audit.
What changed
From Oura Ring 4 to Oura Ring 5
Ring 5 follows Ring 4. The new ring is specified at 6.09 mm wide and 2.28 mm thick, while software is shared with Gen 3 and newer rings. A reviewer found similar ordinary readings to Ring 4, so comfort is better supported than an accuracy upgrade. The table separates supported changes from specifications whose predecessor baseline is unknown. Unknown does not mean unchanged, and current-model findings do not establish a generational improvement.
| Area | Oura Ring 4 | Oura Ring 5 | Net change or carry-over | Buyer impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery rating | The historical Ring 4 specification states five to eight days. | Ring 5 is rated for six to nine days. | Both stated range endpoints rise by one day; these manufacturer ranges are not a controlled runtime comparison. | The rating suggests less frequent charging, but does not guarantee an extra day for an individual wearer. |
| Dimensions and comfort | Exact Ring 4 width and thickness are unverified here. | Ring 5 is specified at 6.09 mm wide and 2.28 mm thick. | A numerical size reduction is unverified; a reviewer did find improved comfort. | Try the sizing and fit rather than assuming the dimensional specification guarantees comfort. |
| Software and readings | Oura’s current software is shared with Gen 3 and newer rings, including Ring 4. | Ring 5 shares that software; a reviewer found similar ordinary readings to Ring 4. | Software availability carries over, and the review does not establish improved clinical accuracy. | Keeping Ring 4 can make sense when fit and trends already meet the need; comfort is a better-supported reason to consider Ring 5. |
